Make Your Oral Health a Priority This Year

Caring for your teeth and gums does more than keep your smile looking great. It plays a key role in your overall health. As you plan your goals for the year ahead, here are a few simple yet powerful habits to help keep your smile strong and healthy all year long.

Brush Consistently (and Correctly)

Brushing twice a day is the foundation of good oral health. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, and spend at least two minutes brushing each time. Be sure to gently clean along the gumline and don’t forget hard-to-reach areas like your back molars. If you tend to rush, try an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer to keep you on track.

Don’t Skip the Floss

Flossing may not be the most exciting habit, but it’s one of the most important. It removes plaque and food particles from between teeth where brushing can’t reach, helping prevent cavities and gum disease. Make flossing part of your nightly routine–right before bed is a great time to remember.

Watch What You Eat and Drink

Sugary and acidic snacks and drinks can take a toll on your enamel. Aim to limit soda, sports drinks, and sugary snacks. When you do indulge, rinse with water afterward to help protect your teeth. Drinking plenty of water and eating crunchy fruits and veggies are great ways to support oral health.

Schedule Regular Dental Checkups

Routine dental visits are essential for preventing problems before they become painful or costly. Professional cleanings remove built-up plaque and tartar, while exams allow your dentist to catch issues early. If it’s been a while since your last visit, now is the perfect time to get back on schedule. Book your next dental checkup.

Protect Your Smile

If you grind your teeth at night, play sports, or experience jaw discomfort, protective devices like night guards or mouthguards can make a big difference. Preventing damage now can save you from bigger issues down the road.

Small, consistent habits can lead to significant improvements in your oral health and your confidence. At Pine Ridge Dental, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re due for a cleaning or seeking guidance about a specific issue, we’re here to help. Contact us today to book an appointment.

How to Deal with Dental Anxiety

If you’re nervous about an upcoming dental appointment, you’re not alone. Approximately 36% of people struggle with a fear of the dentist. Dental anxiety can be debilitating and can prevent sufferers from getting the oral health care they desperately need.

At Pine Ridge Dental, we do everything we can to help you feel calm, safe, and supported every step of the way. We never judge, and we’re here to help you get the care you need in a comfortable, supportive, safe environment. Whether you need a routine cleaning or a more involved procedure, we have several solutions to help you deal with dental anxiety.

How We Help You Feel at Ease

We offer a range of comfort options and sedation methods tailored to your needs. Here’s how we help you relax and regain confidence in dental care:

Music

One of the easiest ways to soothe anxiety is through sound. Drowning out the dental noises with something familiar and enjoyable can make your appointment fly by. We encourage patients to:

  • Bring headphones and listen to your favorite playlist, podcast, or audiobook.
  • Request your favorite music on Alexa. We’re happy to help you set the mood with a calming soundtrack.

Open, Ongoing Communication

Anxiety often grows from the unknowns. Our team prioritizes clear, consistent communication throughout your visit. We’ll explain the procedure, answer your questions, and check in frequently to ensure you’re comfortable. Knowing exactly what to expect can help manage anxious thoughts.

Comfort Items

We know that having items that bring you comfort with you can make a big difference in creating a more comforting environment. We want you to have what you need to feel relaxed. Cozy blankets are available to keep you warm and help you feel secure, but you’re welcome to bring a stress ball, fidget toy, or anything else that helps you stay calm.

Sedation Options for Dental Anxiety Management

For patients who need a little more help managing anxiety, we offer several safe and effective sedation options. You can request sedation for any service. Simply mention that you’d like to explore sedation options when you call to make your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Laughing gas, also known as nitrous oxide, is a safe, mild form of sedation. It’s administered through a small mask placed over your nose, allowing you to breathe in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Laughing gas is fast-acting and wears off quickly, so you can drive yourself home.

Minimal Oral Sedation

If you prefer something a bit stronger, your doctor can prescribe an oral sedative for you to take before your visit. This helps you feel deeply calm while remaining conscious and responsive.

IV Sedation Options

For patients with severe anxiety or those undergoing more complex procedures, we can arrange for:

  • Referral to a trusted IV sedation provider
  • In-house IV sedation with a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)
